DESCRIPTION
Our Model DB-10-E8C all plastic biodiffuser has been developed over 20 years of actual use to be a self-contained, automated, groundwater treatment system to air strip VOCs and promote aerobic bioremediation. Just pipe it up, plug it in and turn it on. It efficiently removes VOCs at flowrates up to 10 gpm with very little maintenance. It also removes iron and manganese. The groundwater is pumped into the first stage of the biodiffuser that acts as an oil/water separator and bioreactor. The groundwater then passes through seven stripping stages where ambient air is drawn through the water column from anti-fouling air spargers. Iron and manganese precipitates are allowed to settle to the bottoms of the stages where it can be easily drained out every six to 12 months of operation. The stripped water overflows into a clearwell where additional settling occurs before being automatically discharged by a pump with level controls. Nutrients, surfactants, sodium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and bacteria can be injected into the first stage and the clearwell. The clearwell contains conductivity probes wired to an intrinsically safe controller that operates a discharge pump rated for 40 gpm. The vapor-tight control panel also includes a second intrinsically safe controller to operate an influent pump up to 2.0 HP. There is a receptacle on the side of the control panel to power a dosing pump for injecting remedial additives such as magnesium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, and flocculants. The contaminated air can be directly discharged or treated through carbon or an incinerator depending upon concentrations and local regulatory requirements. The relative humidity of the air is normally less than 100%. The biodiffuser can also be converted by recirculating nitrogen or CO2 to be an anaerobic reactor or mixing tank for chemical oxidation.
